Mount Alvernia is an all girl's high school established by the Sisters of St. Francis and is located in Pittsburgh, Pa. at the sisters' motherhouse.
The ultimate purpose in all the school's educational activities is the development of the total Christian woman through the cooperative efforts of the student, the home, the school, the community, and the Church. Mount Alvernia continually seek ways to help the student emerge capable of intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, aesthetically and physically integrating Christian values into every aspect of life. Emphasis is placed on creating an atmosphere that nurtures wholesome interpersonal relationships between student and student, teacher and administrator, and school and community.

In 1883, Hansen's disease was ravishing the Hawaiian people and devastating families who were separated from their afflicted loved ones. So Mother Marianne Cope and six sisters sailed to the islands to work at Kalaupapa, Molokai. In the ensuing years, she established missions on Oahu, Maui and Hawaii.
In the ensuing years, the school developed into a full fledged educational institution serving students from preschool through high school. Most recently, after eighty-two years as a single gender school, Saint Francis opened its doors to boys.
Change a Heart:Franciscan Volunteer Program, Millvale, Pa. Watch Video
The Change a Heart Program was created by the Sisters of St. Francis, Millvale in 1999 to attract young adults to leadership in the Church and community, and to challenge them to help empower those in need socially and economically.
Since its inception in 1999, 37 program participants have entered the Change a Heart: Franciscan Volunteer Program, ministering to the needs of over 10,000 poor individuals in three different cities and at 19 different social service agencies.
