Social service ministry supports the commitment of the Sisters of St. Francis to respond to the gospel mandate to serve and to stand with the poor, the immigrant, the disabled, and anyone in need.
The sisters began their social services ministry by attending to marginalized elderly patients in 1862 at the St. Francis Home for the Aged in Buffalo, N.Y. From this point on, the sisters have served the elderly, mentally ill, disabled, orphans, homeless, prisoners, persons with leprosy, and immigrants.
Today, 16 percent of the Sisters of St. Francis work as counselors, social workers, psychologists, managers, nurses, and legal aides with society's poor and outcast. Social services often team up with peace and justice advocates to assure all people are treated with dignity and care.
