Beginning in 1860 with the St. Mary Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa., healthcare has quickly grown to be the second largest ministry of the Sisters of St. Francis and accounts for 28 percent of the sisters in ministry congregation wide. Sisters have served as nurses, doctors, and personal care attendants amongst patients with Hansen’s Disease in Kalaupapa, Molokai in Hawaii. Blessed Marianne Cope answered the call to care for persons with Hansen’s Disease in Hawaii in 1883 and opened the Malulani Hospital in 1884. Click here to read more about Blessed Marianne Cope.
Today, that ministry continues through the St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii which provides health and wellness services to residents throughout the state of Hawaii.
In addition, sisters minister as healthcare professionals throughout the United States, including aboard the Spirit of Health van which offers free health screenings and educational services to those in need in Pittsburgh, Pa.
